Singing is a complicated business.

It’s a combination of the physical, emotional, musical, creative, and sometimes spiritual. It demands discipline and risk-taking, but oftentimes attracts people who can be resistant to those things; people who have the other things necessary - passion and creativity - in spades.

It’s easy to get to stuck in habits that work fine enough, to avoid risks and potential failures.

But that’s not where creativity lives!

creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.

- Dorothy Parker (American poet, writer, critic)

Do you have habits that keep you from progressing further? Are there areas where a small increase in intention could improve your singing a lot?

That could be:

The practicalities of how to practice:

  • Warming up

  • Cooling down

  • Setting achievable goals

  • Structuring sessions

  • Building a routine that works for you

The nitty-gritty of what to practice (and why):

  • Ensuring choices not habits - including registration, vocal qualities and stylistic tropes/devices

  • Musical patterns and expanding melodic/harmonic understanding

  • Rhythm work and improvisation

  • Integrating emotional intention and technique choices

  • Performance and confidence-building work

Maybe all of it.

Let me help!

  • Hi. I’m Tessa.

I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have a BA(Hons) in Jazz Studies and am completing an MA in Vocal Pedagogy in 2023.

I teach Popular Music vocals at the University of Huddersfield, and have previously been a visiting Voice Specialist at Leeds Arts University and Leeds City College.

I have experience teaching a wide range of styles and have taught pretty much all age ranges.

I also have ADHD, so I know the struggles of having so many ideas and desires but not knowing how to put systems in place to make those ideas a reality.

My passion is to help you work with what you have and empower you to be the best singer you can be, creating intentionality in all aspects of your approach.
